En una ceremonia afectada por el protocolo de la pandemia y la postergación de la fecha original, la 93ª edición de los premios Óscar celebró su noche el 25 de abril.
De nuevo sin anfitrión, y repartido entre el Dolby Theatre y la estación ferroviaria Union Station, la austeridad dominó un show monótono y hasta extraño al nivel de las distinciones. Por ejemplo, la categoría de Mejor Director aconteció en primer término, mientras que la de Mejor Película devino la anteúltima. Además, los dos actores principales de Judas and the Black Messiah ingresaron a la categoría Mejor Actor de Reparto.
El evento tuvo incluso un dejo de irrespetuosidad al momento de recordar las personalidades fallecidas en 2020, cuando el clásico segmento "In memoriam" marchó al compás de una música acelerada.
Por otro lado, ninguna producción arrasó. Si bien Mank tenía 10 nominaciones, solo se quedó con dos estatuillas, en tanto que la favorita a Mejor Película, Nomadland, obtuvo esa categoría y otros dos premios. El resto se repartió casi equitativamente.
Se destacaron los sucesos de Chloé Zhao, primera mujer de color y segunda mujer en la historia de los Óscar en ganar el premio, y Youn Yuh-jung, primera actriz coreana y segunda asiática de la historia en obtenerlo. Además, Pete Docter se convirtió el primer director en ganar tres veces la categoría de Mejor Película de Animación. Y, hacia el final de la ceremonia, Anthony Hopkins (83) se transformó en el actor más longevo en recibir el premio.
Vale recordar que la mayoría de los reconocimientos fueron para con películas que no se estrenaron en las salas, sino en las plataformas de streaming, lo que marcó otro hito de la industria.
